What began as a small movement in a couple of states has grown into a major force in education reform. Charter school laws in 44 states and Washington, D.C. give families public school options. The National Alliance developed a model law to help states create laws that support the growth of high-quality charter public schools. Each year we rank states based on how well their charter school laws align to this model. Strong charter school laws provide equitable support to charter school students, flexibility for charter schools, and strong accountability measures for charter schools and their authorizers.
