Transforming Baltimore One Young Woman at a Time

Transforming Baltimore One Young Woman at a Time

June 16, 2016

I have been attending the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) for seven years. BLSYW is a single-sex charter school serving grades 6 through 12 where Baltimore girls learn from some of the city’s finest teachers and gain knowledge of sisterhood. As a founding class member of BLSYW, my class went through a lot together and I have learned so much while attending the school.
BLSYW has provided its students with a plethora of opportunities that expands beyond what any other school in Baltimore has done for its youth. For instance, in the past, I have traveled to New York and Louisiana for standardized test preparation. Additionally, BLSYW has high standards for its students as it requires all students to attain a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.0 to participate in any activities or social events at the school. Such a GPA is imperative since it is also the minimum standard for colleges to consider prospective students. Furthermore, BLSYW has provided me with one hundred percent support in the “college process” and shaping where I see myself after my senior year. With help from Paula Dofat, BLSYW’s college counselor, I was accepted into Loyola University of Maryland. And unlike any other school in the city, BLSYW’s founding class has a one hundred percent college acceptance rate ranging from four and two-year colleges, post-secondary programs, and vocational schools. With that in mind, BLSYW has truly prepared me for what is to come during college. Ultimately, if I were to describe my experience at BLSYW in one word, it would be memorable. I was able to spend numerous years with the same students I met when I was eleven-years-old and I have had the opportunity to see them grow. And although some of the staff within the school has changed, every person who has interacted with me has influenced my life in one way or another. Lastly, BLSYW’s mission is to transform Baltimore one young woman at a time, and based on my personal experience, the school is living up to that. We are so impressed by everything that these students have accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Check back here every day to see a new charter school graduate in our 30 Days of Grad series.
