How You Can Help SaveWashington’s Charter Schools

How You Can Help SaveWashington’s Charter Schools

September 8, 2015

On Friday, the Washington State Supreme Court rejected the voter-approved public charter school law based on a century-old precedent and said that public charter schools cannot receive “common school” public funds because they are not overseen by elected boards.

The ruling came just weeks after Washington’s eight new public charter schools started serving 1,200 students. Each of those charter schools opened their doors to students this morning, but the future is more uncertain.

Here are three ways that you can help support Washington’s charter school students and families:

Join the conversation on social media
Charter school supporters from Washington and around the country have taken the conversation about the Supreme Court ruling online with the hashtag #SaveWACharterSchools.
Contact Washington Governor Jay Inslee
The National Alliance has joined the Washington Association for Public Charter Schools in asking Gov. Inslee to hold a special legislative session to address the charter school law. Click here to contact Gov. Inslee on Facebook and Twitter.

Get the word out.Spread the word among other charter school families and supporters that you know. Even if you’re not from Washington State you can help raise awareness of this issue. All students deserve access to high quality educational options regardless of where they live.
