Dr. Emanuel Vincent, Furlow Charter School

Dr. Emanuel Vincent, Furlow Charter School

September 8, 2015

Today, preparing students with the skills necessary to be competitive in a diverse global economy is starting as early as kindergarten. The Furlow Charter School in Americus, Georgia, led by Principal Dr. Emanuel Vincent, is among the new charter schools opening this year that will offer multi-disciplinary curriculum in all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade. This includes Spanish language education, as well as service learning and the study of fine arts.

Another unique part of the experience at Furlow is that from kindergarten through fifth grade, scholars will “loop” with the same teacher, creating an environment where advisors are acutely aware of scholars’ strengths and areas for improvement. Scholars in grades fourth and fifth take part in a “pick me up” activities Tuesday and Thursday for 20 minutes. Pick me up is an interactive brain base activity which allows scholars and advisors to interact with their environment. Pick me up activity for the middle grades happens 5 days a week lead by scholars.

As one of the many traditional public school leaders joining the charter movement, Dr. Vincent recently served as Vice Principal of Pinevale Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia. He is a Massachusetts Education Policy Fellow, a Carnegie Fellow, a Springfield College Writing Fellow and a Fulbright Fellow who studied educational leadership trends in Costa Rica, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands and Japan.

“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” – Marie Curie
