WASHINGTON, D.C. – National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nina Rees announced that Linda Moore, founder of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School, will be inducted today into the National Charter Schools Hall of Fame for contributions to the parents and students of the public charter school movement:
The daughter of a longtime elementary school teacher, Linda Moore is a leading advocate for children and families both in Washington, D.C., and across the country. Throughout a career committed to the needs of the underserved, “Linda has established a leading model of urban education with the Stokes School,” said Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “Moore is a driving force outside the classroom, where she has worked tirelessly to advance the model of educational environments focused on achievement, respect and non-violence that prepare young learners of diverse backgrounds to overcome the challenges of poverty.”
For more than 35 years, Moore has worked to improve conditions for underserved children and families. Moore is the founder and Executive Director of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School, one of the premier public schools in Washington, D.C. Since 1998, the Stokes School has prepared culturally diverse pre-school and elementary school students to be leaders while teaching them to think, speak, read, write and learn in multiple languages. Throughout her career, Moore has designed and provided professional development programs for educators and community leaders throughout the United States focused on working effectively in multicultural settings on behalf of children and families. Moore currently serves on the D.C. Charter School Association Board of Directors and is the chairperson of the D.C. Charter School Special Education Collaborative. “I am honored to be selected for membership into the National Charter School Hall of Fame. This honor is an affirmation of our vision for developing a new generation of scholars and global citizens who are committed to social justice,” said Moore. “The honor is not mine alone, however it is rightfully shared with the parents, teachers, administrators and community partners who have also believed in this vision and with the Stokes School scholars who prove to us each day that they are prepared to be the leaders required by our communities, our nation and our world.”
The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools each year honors a very special group of individuals and organizations as new inductees to the National Charter Schools Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes individuals and organizations for their contributions in the following areas: pioneering efforts in the development and growth of charter schools; commitment and contributions to charter schools and education; innovative ideas and successful implementation of those ideas; and inspiration to others in the charter school movement. Moore, along with the Walton Family Foundation and Lisa Graham Keegan, CEO of the Education Breakthrough Network, as 2013 inductees will join a select group of 20 other members who have been honored since the Charter Schools Hall of Fame was established. The new inductees will be officially honored at today’s General Session of the 2013 National Charter Schools Conference in Washington, D.C. Each year this conference brings together thousands of charter leaders, teachers, advocates, policy makers and education reformers to share innovative ideas and be inspired by some of the brightest minds in education, public policy, business and philanthropy.
