Today at the National Charter Schools Conference, Uncommon Schools was named the winner of the 2013 Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools. The Uncommon Schools network consists of 32 public charter schools—and more than 78 percent of Uncommon’s nearly 8,000 students across Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York are from low-income backgrounds. That said, Uncommon’s students are outperforming their peers statewide. For example, Uncommon’s seniors achieved an average SAT score of 1570 – 20 points above the college-readiness benchmark of 1550 established by the College Board. As NAPCS President and CEO Nina Rees noted, “Results like this are indeed uncommon –and, by all measures, inspiring – to us all. I commend Uncommon Schools and every teacher, parent and student involved in this success. Generations of student lives will be changed because of your good work.”
