Cyndi Burnstein, New School High

Cyndi Burnstein, New School High

September 10, 2015

Cyndi Burnstein, who has 40 years of teaching and school leadership experience, is adding founding New School High in Plymouth, Mich. to her impressive list of work to improve public education. To offer a sample of her many achievements: she co-founded award-winning Humanities courses as well as the Spectra program, an interdisciplinary school-within-a school that dramatically reduced failure rates in core classes, she co-authored and coordinated a $1.2 million U.S. Department of Education Smaller Learning Communities grant, and she has won numerous awards for education leadership, all while teaching English full-time.
This fall, in the town she has called home for the last 37 years, Cyndi will open a teacher-led public charter high school that will offer students a safe and healthy education experience built upon research about the most effective ways to educate teenagers. New School High will offer students a later start time that is aligned to young adults’ sleep cycles; a flexible daily schedule; a commitment to project-based learning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), standards-based assessment, restorative practice, and a strong focus on health and wellness. The school’s motto is “Great minds work hard” – and this new charter school is certainly a testament to Cyndi’s hard work as a dedicated public school educator. Learn more about New Scool High.
