Friday the Thirteenth Was My Lucky Day

Friday the Thirteenth Was My Lucky Day

June 4, 2016

Who knew that Friday the thirteenth would be one of the luckiest days of my life? I won the lottery on Friday, January 13, 2012 when my name was called to attend Sturgis Charter Public School. Four years later, I am graduating from Sturgis in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Sturgis Charter Public School has helped me succeed in a multitude of ways. My charter school has made me the bold, brave, and socially-conscious leader I am today.
My charter school has helped me succeed by providing me with a financially feasible and exceptional education. I sought out a challenging and invigorating academic atmosphere. I wanted to surround myself with students who are as passionate about education as I am. Sturgis Charter Public School provided me with unmatched resources. Thanks to my charter school, there are zero financial boundaries holding me back. Diversity at my charter school is integral to who I am. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at my charter school opened my eyes to the world. My teachers come from around the world, from India to Wales. They have taught in other countries including Thailand and Greece. History and English are not just taught from the point of view of the United States, but rather that of the whole world. My school sponsors unique travel opportunities. Throughout high school, I have traveled to 15 countries. Each day, I have heard unique perspectives that make me reflect. My charter school welcomes students from more than 15 towns. Had I not attended my charter school, I would not have met such diverse students and teachers. Ultimately, the presence of varying viewpoints at charter schools allows students to see the value in listening to a wide array of experiences. Moreover, my charter school has provided me with the perfect academic foundation to succeed in the Ivy League. Thanks to the support and encouragement of my charter school, I am attending Columbia University in New York City. Sturgis Charter Public School prepared me for the rigors of a large research university. My school taught me valuable public speaking and writing skills. I know that my charter school has prepared me for higher education. I am grateful for my charter school because it provided the foundation for me to achieve my goals. The personal connections I have made at my charter school have been the catalyst for my success. I blossom when my teachers challenge and encourage me. Every person at my school gets to know one another on a meaningful and individual level. The incredible teachers and supportive students make for a one-of-a-kind sense of community. My charter school makes me part of something bigger than myself, with the goal of creating positive change in my community.   I will never forget the day I won the charter school lottery. Sturgis Charter Public School has become my lifestyle, an indispensable contributor to my personal growth. My charter school’s spirit of innovation and adventure will always remain within me.
