It’s Oscar season! (Sort of.) The Milken Family Foundation is traveling the country delivering its 2015 Milken Educator Awards—often referred to as “the Oscars of teaching”—to up to 40 unsuspecting teachers, principals, and other learning specialists. The awards have been given out since 1987, and they recognize early- to mid-career educators who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and the promise of continued excellence in the future. Each award, which is a surprise to the recipient, comes with a $25,000 check and inclusion in the Milken Educators Network.
Charter public school teachers and leaders have been among the early awardees. They include, so far, Jessica Cunningham, the principal of KIPP DC College Prep; Matt Harvey, a math teacher at CORE Butte Charter School in Chico, California; and Allison Cuttler, who teaches math and computer science at North Star Academy College Prep in Newark, New Jersey.
