This year, Jessica Cunningham, principal of KIPP DC College Prep, was awarded with the Milken Educator Award—a prestigious annual recognition given to outstanding educators furthering excellence in education. Each year, the award is announced during a surprise school-wide gathering for the recipient that includes distinguished local officials, a Milken Family Foundation representative, and state and federal leaders.
Since becoming a school leader, Cunningham has helped guide KIPP DC to be the highest-performing open enrollment high school in Washington, DC. Cunningham has deep roots in education as her mother was a teacher, and has shown her dedication to excellence in education during her 11 years working in KIPP charter schools. The Milken Educator Awards were created by Milken Family Foundation to attract, retain and motivate outstanding talent to the teaching profession. Since 1987, the Milken Family Foundation has devoted more than $138 million in funding to the Milken Educator Awards, including over $66 million in individual awards to more than 2,600 recipients, plus powerful professional development opportunities and networking with leading education stakeholders. The National Alliance congratulates Cunningham’s achievement and continues to support educators and school leaders who are committed to excellence in education for students.
