I am so excited that today is the first full day of the National Charter Schools Conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. I’ve downloaded the mobile app for my iPhone to create my personalized conference schedule; here are my Monday highlights:
Failure is Not an Option: Closing the Opportunity Gap at an Urban High School – July 1st; 10:45 AM–12:00 PM During this interactive session, participants will learn how a minority-serving urban high school implemented a “Failure is Not an Option” (FNO) program resulting in measurable increases in student learning. Focusing on data-driven decisions and the integration of the Common Core, presenters will share how FNO incorporates innovative strategies, Individualized Education Plans, eighth hour focused instruction and targeted coursework to effectively close the opportunity gap. Teaching Mathematics as a Language: What Gets Lost in Translation? – July 1st, 4:00 PM–5:15 PM One of the major thrusts of the Common Core Standards for algebra is to understand Mathematics as a language. In this workshop, the presenters will clearly demonstrate the syntax of mathematical language. First, the session will identify the five parts of mathematical speech. Then the presenters will demonstrate the four types of mathematical expressions. Finally, they will easily translate between Mathematics and English, improving the understanding and the teaching of ”story problems.” As a mathematics major interested in teaching High School, I am looking forward to the STEM session on teaching mathematics, and I’m sure the Opportunity Gap session will be very inspirational!
