This week Education Cities released the Education Equality Index (EEI), which measures the achievement gap between students from low-income families and their more advantaged peers.
The Index ranked cities according to achievement gap, and Hialeah, Fla., was the city with the smallest difference in academic performance between low-income and more affluent students. For all of the cities included in the EEI, up to 10 schools were highlighted for having a small achievement gap. In top-ranked Hialeah, eight of the 10 featured schools are charter schools, including:
Mater Academy Charter High
Mater Academy Charter Middle
Mater Academy Lakes High School
Mater Academy Lakes Middle School
Mater Gardens Academy
Mater Gardens Academy Middle School
Mater Performing Arts & Entertainment Academy
Youth Co-Op Charter School
The EEI score is calculated by “identifying the percentage of students from low-income families that reach proficiency averaged across every subject/grade, and comparing it to the percentage of all students across a given state that reach proficiency averaged across every subject/grade.” While we recognize that the K-12 education system has a long way to go to ensure every student is receiving a high-quality education, the National Alliance applauds charter schools, like the eight in Hialeah, that are closing achievement gaps and improving students’ educational outcomes.
