Lawyer. Doctor. Meteorologist. Preacher. Professional Wrestler. These are the career dreams of my oldest grandson, Jordan. Jordan’s always carried with him a long list of goals influenced by his interests, his hobbies, and his indelible care for others. So, when his grades started slipping at the community school where he was enrolled, I needed to find some answers.
I’ve always been a big proponent of neighborhood schools, but when we moved across town, Jordan began being bullied at his new school. To stop being a target, Jordan started dumbing-down his school work and participation. I went to the Principal and the Superintendent for help and got none. I felt discouraged and frustrated, but most of all, I needed to find an alternative for my grandson. Your support of public charter schools gave me options and gave Jordan the opportunity to be a good student again. Please, continue giving this gift of a great education, today. I’d heard about Families Empowered’s school of choice meeting at a local store. Jordan and I got on the bus and rode 30 miles to the site. We were welcomed by an administrator from the KIPP schools. I met other parents and guardians who are as invested in their children as I am in my grandsons. And I met young people learning at KIPP schools who impressed me and befriended Jordan. A short while after the meeting, I got a call from that same school administrator, inviting Jordan to apply for one of three open slots at KIPP Liberation. Your support of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools means more children like Jordan will get a shot at an education that meets their needs and helps them reach their potential. Jordan is now enrolled as a 5th grader at KIPP Liberation, and his little brother, Jabarri, attends preschool at KIPP PEACE, next door. Since that first bus ride to the outskirts of town for the school choice meeting, I’ve become a volunteer advocate for Family Empowered. My next stop is Houston, to tell my story at the Coalition for Greater Houston Schools! Yes, I do it for Jordan and Jabarri, but also for all the children and parents who have not had the opportunity to choose public charter schools. The National Alliance and I advocate for all the families who do not have access to the quality teachers, quality curriculum, and quality principals and administrators that every family deserves. We need to have tough conversations that encourage positive change in our public schools. With your help, the National Alliance can ensure those conversations happen, and they result in systemic change in the way we educate our children here in Houston and across the country. Through December 31st, your gift to the National Alliance will be matched $2 to $1 by the Katzman Ernst Family Foundation. Please, make your gift today! The National Alliance has set a stretch goal of raising $25,000 to help expand the reach of public charter schools and bring school choice to families who need it. Don’t miss this opportunity to maximize your impact and join the fight!
