WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nina Rees released the following statement today in response to a new report from the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) On the Road to Better Accountability: An Analysis of State Charter School Policies.
“We congratulate the National Association of Charter School Authorizers on the release of its thorough report analyzing the quality of state laws with respect to authorizing. We are particularly encouraged to see relatively strong alignment between their policy recommendations for creating high-quality authorizers and those in our own model public charter school law. The recommendations in the report, if adopted, would lead to better authorizing, and in turn, more high quality charter schools.
“Through this new report, NACSA has succeeded in calling greater attention to the need for high quality authorizing. We look forward to partnering with NACSA to determine how best to implement their recommendations in states where they are most needed.”
About Public Charter Schools
Public charter schools are independent, public, and tuition-free schools that are given the freedom to be more innovative while being held accountable for advancing student achievement. Since 2010, many independent research studies have found that students in charter schools do better in school than their traditional school peers. For example, one study by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University found that charter schools do a better job teaching low income students, minority students, and students who are still learning English than traditional schools. Separate studies by the Center on Reinventing Public Education and Mathematica Policy Research have found that charter school students are more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college, stay in college and have higher earnings in early adulthood.
