National Alliance Stands with Washington State Students and Families as Court Hears Oral Arguments to Determine Charter Public School Constitutionality

January 27, 2017

Today King County Superior Court will hear final arguments in El Centro de la Raza v. Washington, the latest lawsuit filed by several lobbying organizations attempting to undo last years bipartisan charter public school law upholding the will of Washington voters, who approved charters by ballot initiative in 2012. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools has released the following statement:

“We are proud to stand with the students, families and schools of Washington State who will be defending not only their individual schools, but the future of charter public schools in the state, at the final trial court hearing in the anti-charter lawsuit, El Centro de la Raza v. Washington State (El Centro). The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools has filed an amicus brief to lend our voice in support of the Charter Public Schools Act and to encourage the court to choose the education of 1,700 students over the political interests of lobbyists.”

“This lawsuit is just another politically motivated attack designed to close high-performing charter public schools and prevent children in Washington State from having any choice in their public education. We are confident that Washington State courts will support the rights of public school students over political interests and allow these charter public schools to keep their doors open. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is proud to support the brave families who have been forced to defend their children’s public education in court.”
