The Hallicrafters S-38 series BC / Shortwave receiver with variable BFO for continuous wave (Morse) reception was an iconic entry level shortwave radio produced from 1946 through the early 60s. As Hallicrafters’ first post WWII consumer BC / SW receiver, it was a stylish, and capable shortwave receiver. Basic in circuitry, it was sensitive enough to pull in worldwide broadcasts. The S-38B (c. 1949) was similar to the original with minor circuit refinements and design by famed industrial designer, Raymond Loewy. The S-38 influenced makers like Trio (later Kenwood) who emulated its design.
Useable as-is or for further restoration. Tested on all bands. Coils, VC and BFO seem A-OK. Controls move smoothly. Receives well - requires long wire for SW or distant / weak BC. Shortwave bands: 6-7 MC, 9-10 MC, 11-12MC, 15-18 MC
